Product Training: Zip Strut-Lock

Ep.3 – Weekly product training, this week with Rick Harmer.

The Zip Strut-Lock comes in M8 and M10 and is generally used within the HVAC and M & E Industries where your standard containment is used.  The Strut-Lock works with 41 x 41 and 41 x 21 Channel or angle iron.  Insert the threaded fixing through a square plate and into a channel nut.  Then twist the channel nut into the Channel and tighten it up.  You can then pass the 2mm wire through and create your trapeze.

Once the trapeze is made it can then be your platform to run Cable Tray, Cable Basket or Trunking.  It can also be used to fix rubber-lined clips direct to the channel.  The Trapeze can be made in multi-layers, so you can run multiple layers of services depending on the requirements of the project.  The Strut-Locks are not suitable for use in areas of elevated heat or moisture, so can’t be installed outside or in swimming pools etc.

Benefits of the Strut-Lock System.

They are very flexible in installation, meaning they can be hung from most ceilings with ease.  Can be installed very quickly and once they are installed they are easy to adjust to the required height.  The Strut-Lock system reduces huge amounts of material as they replace the need to use threaded rod lengths.  This in turn means the system is more environmentally friendly.

The M8 Strut-Lock has a SWL of 45KG Per wire, this means that per layer they can take 90KG.  The M10 have a SWL of 90KG per wire, so they can take 180KG of weight per layer on the trapeze.  The M10 Strut-Lock uses a 3mm wire which is a more heavy-duty fixing therefore it can take more weight.

Zip clips offer this product as a system which comes with the lengths of wire.  These systems are available in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10M lengths.  There are many other manufacturers of wire, but Zip will only guarantee their Strut-Lock if you use it with the Zip wire.  They also do a coated wire option for more decorative installations, but the Strut-Lock is not compatible with this wire either.

There are multiple fixings that can be used to secure this system.  Whether it be into a ceiling or around a purlin, Zip has it all covered.

Product Advice: Cutting & tapping fluid

What is Cutting & Tapping Fluid?

There are many benefits to cutting & tapping fluid is a versatile cutting lubricant that makes metal working easier when cutting, tapping, and drilling!

It is a high-performance metal cutting lubricant which can be used on all tough metals including stainless steel. Additives reduce friction and will keep the metal at a balanced temperature to avoid seizing. Dissipates heat which in turn reduces cutting time, metal scrap and downtime. This protects and extends the life of the tool.

During thread cutting apply cutting and tapping fluid by dipping, spraying or brushing it onto the blade or tool.  It can be used with both handheld tools and heavy machinery making it very versatile.

What products Cutting & Tapping Fluid can be used with?

There is a variety of cutting tools that will benefit from the use of cutting & tapping fluid!

These include the below:

Cutting Fluid

Conecut Taper Drill bits, Dart Holesaws, Dart Dry cut saw blade, Second cut taps and Drill Bits.

How to use Cutting & Tapping fluid?
  • Gently shake the aerosol can and spray it in an upright position.
  • Apply the fluid to the cutting tool before starting the cutting operation.
  • Be very cautious when applying the fluid whilst the machine is moving.
What is Cutting & Tapping Compound

Cutting compound is a specially formulated cutting, tapping, and drilling lubricant which will not break down under extreme pressure. A coating of the cutting compound onto the blade will allow the cutting tool to remove the swarf and cut chips of metal with less friction. It requires less effort when cutting even for the hardest metals.  It will also reduce cutting times and you will see an improvement in the surface finish when using this excellent product.

This product has been made to be suitable for all types of steels and ceramics, and even high-tensile steels. It can be removed with all common industrial degreasers and solvent cleaners like our multi-purpose cleaning wipes.

Latest News: How to Save Money on Channel Installations

As we all know, most electrical or mechanical installations require channel support systems in some shape or form. However, where these installations are light-duty, they can be over-specified, meaning more expense for technicians and engineers. To ease the impact for Armaflo customers, we’re sharing some expert advice on how to save money on channel installations. Thank us later!

Why do light-duty installations tend to be expensive?

Channel support systems represent essential infrastructure in building services. Whether you’re installing cables, pipework, ducting, lighting or cable tray, you’ll need to provide these components with strong, sturdy support. However, we know that providing that level of support can come at a significant cost.  So – why are light-duty installations usually so expensive?

The answer to that question is simple: overspecification. Time and time again, we’ve seen light-duty installations using 41 x 41mm channel (2.5mm) gauge when they don’t need it. This over-specification will inevitably add to the costs associated with the installation.

How Can I Save Money on Channel Installations?

For light-duty installations, there are several steps you can take to make big savings on costs. Here are just a few of them:

Consider Your Choice of Gauge: As mentioned above, we’ve seen plenty of cases of over specification around channel lengths and gauges. Consider this – depending on the quantity required, the average price for a length of 41 x 41mm channel is around £11.75. By using 41 x 21mm (2.5mm gauge), you can save roughly 20% on costs. By the end of the installation, you’ll see that these savings quickly add up.

Opt for a Lighter Choice: You can also save money on light-duty channel installations by switching to the light gauge (1.5mm). By doing this, you can make an even bigger saving of 38% on the equivalent of 41 x 41 mm.

Check Your Specs: Before you make any choices around channel support systems, you must consult their data sheets to determine various calculations, including safe workloads. To check out data sheets for our channel support systems, simply access a product via the channel support page and download the datasheet. By taking this step, you can ensure that the project will not fail.

Consult Your Trusted Suppliers: Cutting costs on channel installations begins with knowing the right information. Before you place an order, don’t hesitate to reach out to one of our many trusted advisors at Armaflo. We can help you with the perfect system that will cost-effectively provide sufficient support. Go on – just get in touch!

Know Your Safe Working Load: Based on a 1mtr span, a 41 x 21mm length has a safe working load of approximately 30% of that of a 41 x 41mm (2.5mm gauge). Meanwhile, a 41 x 41mm length (1.5mm gauge) will provide a safe working load of around 55% of that of a 41 x 41mm (2.5mm). Work it out, choose carefully and enjoy the savings!

When it comes to saving money on light-duty installations, it pays to use a lower-profile channel. Aside from lessening the impact on your pocket, taking this step will also lessen the impact on the environment. Everyone’s a winner!
